WINNIPEG — Thousands of Winnipeg residents wearing red and white T-shirts gathered at the provincial legislature grounds to form a human flag as part of Canada Day Celebrations.
The ‘living flag’ event Friday morning broke a record set by Victoria, B.C. last year, according to organizers.
An estimated 3,400 people turned out for the massive Canada Day photo-op, according to Downtown Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone executive director Stefano Grande.
The goal of the event was to get those thousands of people, decked out in red and white T-shirts, into a human Canadian flag formation.
“Victoria can’t rain on our parade by bringing their bad weather here,” volunteers shouted to the crowd.
Amee Scott said she heard about the event on the radio and had to be a part of it.
“I’m here for the competition with Victoria and I really want Winnipeg to beat it,” she said.
A similar event in Victoria last year saw more than 2,000 people take part. However, Winnipeg’s victory could be shortlived: the B.C. city was set to host another living flag event Friday afternoon.
