ST. PAUL, Minnesota - Winnipeg's new NHL franchise is indeed going to be called the Jets.
The Winnipeg Jets fled to Phoenix in 1996, but the Manitoba capital recently received the relocated franchise previously known as the Atlanta Thrashers.
Jets co-owner Mark Chipman made it official that the Jets were back Friday night, just before general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff made the team's first-round pick at the NHL entry draft.
No logo, sweaters or colours accompanied the announcements, but the Winnipeg Free Press has been told when it does, it will likely bear no resemblance to the style used by the former NHL team in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg was home to the Jets from 1972 to 1979 in the World Hockey Association, and from 1979 to 1996 in the NHL.
True North Sports & Entertainment said it had settled on the Jets largely due to to demand from the region's fans.
